The Music Plays On — Elvis Presley in Las Vegas

On this day, August 16, 1977, Elvis Presley passed away.

There were two things that I distinctly remember from the summer of 1977 — seeing Star Wars and the death of Elvis Presley. There were few names bigger, both figuratively and literally, in Las Vegas and between 1969 and 1976, Elvis sold out 837 consecutive shows at the International Hotel. My grandmother’s house wasn’t too far from this hotel and we would frequently pass by the billboard.

In a wonderful New York Times article from last summer, Presley’s return to the stage in 1969 completely reinvigorated what was a flagging career.
